Sounds Bizarre but seems I have 4 vintage rectangular Album Leaf paintings by Xia Gui. Ink on silk, they are encased in a sealed glass frame 14”x6” each. The naturalistic slanted “axe-cut brushstrokes “on the hills, variety of brush ink for the trees from jet-black to grey in monochrome style, graded ink washes, overlapping brushstrokes and the effects of Mist, sky and infinity makes this personal style as unique and inimitable work of art.
Presumably an Album leaf of XIA GUI painting in silk cloth
This is a 4-panel Chinese table screen. It is unfortunately not a Xia Gui. There is a difference in delicacy of brushstrokes, as well as the age of the piece, which is evidenced by color and degrees of fading.
Chinese traditional painting is often very standardized. Painters copy each other as a rule. For example, there is an important manual called the Mustard Seed Garden Manual, produced in the 1600s that describes how to paint each kind of plant/bird/tree/etc. So, when you see a particular style, it may appear very similar to other painters’, especially the important masters like Xia Gui.
Your piece is likely from the 20th century. I have included links below to similar pieces to give you an idea of the market. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
