This is a 52in x 148in wall mural. It's a 3d metal replica of the "Qingming Shanghe Tu" painting by the Song dynasty painter Zhang Zeduan (1085–1145).
It was hung in a family home.
Dear Christina,
What you have is a very detailed depiction of the Qingming festival made in China in ( second half )20th century. Its completely carved in limestone or marble plate and painted afterwards with gold-paint to give more accent to the details and show the craftsmanship. Its really a great carving done by a master in its craft. I believe when this came to auction it would fetch a price close to the estimate. Its a little bit a shot in the dark; I never saw one like this before. Could go much higher if the right bidders are there. If you would like to sell it please use an auction house with a prescription to a world wide platform like Invaluable or life auctioneers. That way you are sure the piece has good exposure and will sell ( back to China I believe ) for a good price. Only size and weight can hold back bidding maybe a little bid; shipping will be very expensive.
Great. Looks horrible and almost feel guilty asking but its on the back so no damage done. It looks like a kind of marble or limestone. Can you confirm its a sort of mineral plaque ? It look like the representation looks like cut out of soft mineral stone and then painted with gold paint. I'm I correct in your opinion ?
If you can make a small scratch ( at the back please ) in the material it is most likely limestone. The object most be quite heavy then ?
Regards,
Simon Breider
Yes it feels like it's a soft stone from just scratching it and yes it's very heavy!
Hi again!
Just checking the status of this appraisal. Please let me know if hkj need any additional information.
Hi Simon,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. My husband cut off a piece of the plywood. I hope you can see the back clearly. Also the mural was purchased in 1988 and imported from China according to my father-in-law.
Best,
Christina
