Silk scroll and rice paper. 49.5” x 23.25”

Thank you for contacting Mearto. This is an ink painting on paper mounted on a silk brocade scroll. The artist depicts a warrior, possibly the six-armed Tibetan deity Mahakala or the Japanese war god Hachiman, on horseback. In his hands he holds various objects: a sparrow, monkey, two swords and the horse’s reins. On his head he wears a lion cap. He is riding atop clouds, and his head is encircled with a ring of fire, representing the boundary between the known universe and the chaotic. The composition of the painting and the signature suggest a Japanese artist. Tibetan compositions are usually more crowded.
This painting was probably made during the 19th or 20th century.
