Circa 1925 wood high chair
11 November 2025
Description

Solid wood high chair with all black varnish. In good condition. Underside of seat and foot rest you can see wood where some varnish wore off. No markings except the statement "patent applied for" on underside of tray. My mother passed at 98 last month and the high chair belonged to her late husband so it had sentimental value to them. Legs are spindled and tray is attached by curved wood wrapped around to attach to the spindled back of the chair.

What does this mean?

Hi Judith,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

This is a Colonial Revival Windsor child's high chair, made during a period that began around 1876 as a nostalgic look back and emulation of earlier examples made at the time of America's birth in the late 18th and early 19th Century. While there are a few Windsor high chairs made for children from that period, the attachable tray was a 20th Century feature that was added to the design.

While I would have probably said this chair was made AFTER 1925, it's hard to make out the exact age on this chair through the thick black painted surface, so I'll give this the benefit of the doubt as to its age so it aligns with your family's history.

Sadly, reproduction Windsor chairs of virtually all second period manufacture are quite soft on the market these days; if this were to be sold at auction, I would be very surprised if it sold for more than $100.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Colonial Revival style ebonized child's Windsor sackback high chair
unattributed maker, American, circa 1925
The bentwood back raised on five spindles through a continuous back rail continuing to shaped arms, the saddle seat raised on flaring baluter-turned legs joined by a double H-stretcher, fitted with a foot rail and pivoting tray top. Unmarked.
35-1/2 inches overall height
CONDITION: This appears to be in very good condition.
