Coromandel Lacquer vintage Chinese Divider. Four fold sections, Double sided, 72 inch tall and 18 inch wide, 1 inch thick. Front side has hand carved soap stone and old ancient Chinese writing. Each one tells a story. Back side has beautiful hand painted gold flowers and bamboo over the black background. Has brass feet and hinges and is made of cherry wood. What I find fascinating is it is made like they were made in the 16 century. Also, this was made before they created the maker marks stamp. Each makers mark is intricately hand painted on every single divider. I got this from someone I love very much that recently passed. Thank you so much for taking your time to look at this. Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
You have a 20th century Chinese four-panel coromandel screen. Each panel is black lacquered and centered with a carved soapstone (and possibly ivory/bone) figure of a draped female in traditional dress. These screens were produced for Western trade and not for indigenous use. They are quite abundant on the secondary market and the very well crafted, ornate ones are the most desirable, specifically ones with a lot of precious stone like Jade.
My appraisal is for a well-advertised auction. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Kind regards,
Corey
