Silk embroidered child's hat, in excellent condition. The length is about 33cm
Bought in about 1985 in Hong Kong, from a merchant we dealt with who occasionally brought back a few interesting items such as this on his return from business trips to China. We have built up a modest collection of such items - embroidered hats, purses, costumes, etc
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a silk embroidered children´s cap or part of. The cap is decorated with two chinese characters "xi" for double happiness amoung peaches ( symbol for long life) and pomegranates and a bird on the front. The pomegranate symbolizes a wish for many children and the bird might depict the magpie, another symbol for happiness. The execution and fineness of this 清代童帽 is superb and surprisingly the imperial yellow was chosen, the most prestigious color. During the late qing dynasty and early republic era the strict regulations regarding the use of yellow loosened. Auction results for similar caps in western auctions are surprisingly low. The estimate is based on these results. "Asking prices" in the trade can be higher and vary.
