The skirt is in two pieces which fasten together, overlapped, so the the peacock panels are front and rear, and the pleats are at each side. The fabric is silk, and has a small amount of age (and moth?) damage. The length from top of waistband to hem is 100cm; from bottom of waistband to hem is 81cm
This skirt was bought in Hong Kong in the early 1980's from what one might call a junk shop. It was bundled in among a mass of modern era Chinese opera costumes, all rayon, machine sewn, nylon zips, etc. This skirt, though, was entirely different and we were very lucky to obtain it for a reasonable price.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an antique Chinese Qing Dynasty skirt, late 19th century. Red or pink pleaded silk brocade with gold color wire embroideries of flowers ? and buddhist symbols (?), blue silk and black silk trim with floral / peonies design. With two large panels delicately embroidered with a pair of male peacocks above clouds and waves, with linen or cotton waistband. The estimate is based on similar items offered or sold at auction. "Asking prices" in the trade can be much higher and vary.
