Hi Virginia,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Schlemmer has a small body of work that has sold at auction to provide an idea of fair-market value but the highest price on record is $720 in 2006 when the market was stronger but this is a much nicer painting than that and, in the correct auction in Indiana where there would be local appeal, I think this could set a record for artist.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
Fritz (Ferdinand) Louis Schlemmer (American, 1892-1947)
Still life with fruits and vegetables and a basket on a table
oil on canvas
signed upper left
35 by 37 inches
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition; value assumes no repairs, breaks or inpainting
PROVENANCE: acquired from the artist, thence by inheritance
$500-800*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
