Over millions of years, a petrified tortoise shell transforms from organic bone into solid rock, creating a remarkable natural cast of a prehistoric reptile's home. This happens through permineralization, a process where mineral-rich water seeps into the porous bone. As crystals deposit within these spaces, they replicate the shell's original structure down to a microscopic level.
I am unable to discern, from images, if this is the upper (carapace) or lower (plastron) section of a shell, the matrix and minerals have altered the recognizable shape. I do note the segmentation of the shell and the bone structure.
