I know very little about this clock except for the information provided at auction. Circa 1870. Movement Marked Gustav Becker & A. Stingl. It unfortunately does not work. I wound it up and hung the pendulum. I can hear it ticking and the arms move as long as the pendulum is swinging but it won’t stay swinging. I’m not a collector but bought it because it’s unique and I liked the red face and the intricate metal work. I’m looking to sell it because it doesn’t work. I’ve heard repairing it decreases the value. There is also a slight crack to the face glass on the side.

Hi Ann,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Gustav Becker was a prominent German clockmaker who founded his own company, Gustav Becker Uhrenfabrik, in 1850 in Germany. His company became one of the most renowned producers of clocks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Becker clocks are known for their exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and precision.
Anton Stingl was an Austrian clockmaker known for his craftsmanship in producing high-quality mechanical clocks. He was associated with the production of fine, precision clocks in Vienna, Austria, during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
One of these probably made the case while the other made the works.
At auction today, these clocks - if they are in working order without damage or repair - typically sell for between $500 and $1,000 depending on ornament, success of design, etc. In its current condition, this has a value of $200-400.
Contemporary repairs CAN BE a red flag to potential buyers who may wonder what these repairs might be hiding; we typically recommend sellers sell pieces in "as-is" condition and let the buyers decide how if they want to repair things and how extensively. (Also, this protects you from spending monies to restore it you might not recoup if you sell it).
