What does this mean?

Dear Laurie,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a print on paper with unknown measurements. The print was made in a lithograph technique and depicts a hunter on a horse. This piece was made in the first half of the 20th century.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 10 to 30 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hello Geirg,

My photos are not great, but I was informed this is a reverse painting with gold shavings. Thoughts? There are clearly gold shavings inlaid around this painting. Has to have a value of more than $10?

Dear Laurie,

Thank you for your email and I can understand that you are not happy with the estimate. Sadly this is a print with a high edition and the metallic additions are highly probable not the element gold.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hi Georg,

I've downloaded a few more pictures for you to view. I carefully removed the picture ftom its frame. This indeed is painted on glass, there are a few loose gold flakes too. paper, there is thin piece of tissue paper as you can see over the back to protect it.

Thank you for another look.

Dear Laurie,

Thank you for your email. This is a lithographic print which is partly overworked with golden color and ink.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hello Laurie,
Thank you for your interest in appraising the item with Mearto. I apologize for the back and forth on this item. I ran an extensive reserve image search on the work and no hits were returned. This informs me that the image appears to be an original composition. With that said, I do not see any signature or identifying marks. This makes it difficult to firmly attribute the work to a specific artist and provide an accurate appraisal.

I can tell you the work appears to be composed with gouache and gold leaf embellishments as a reverse glass painting. Lithography may have been used to lay down initial linework. However, that would take an in-person examination with magnification to determine. Further, the image appears to be in the style of Heywood Hardy (English, 1843 - 1933). He was best known for his English hunting scene illustrations and prints (thus the possible lithographic linework). The painting does present some serious conditions in the form of moisture damage, foxing, and toning to the sheet. I would suggest replacing the sheet and storing in a more stable and dry frame to avoid any further damage.

In today's market, a fair market value estimate for a comparable reverse glass painting of an English hunting scene in the style of Hardy would reach about $20 - 100. This estimate is based on recent auction estimates and results of work not firmly attributed to artists. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care,
Sara
