40cm x 30cm. Nineteenth Century landscape Dutch artist. On canvas! The painting depicts a storm on a coast as far as I can interpret!
I have inherited it from my aunt(now deceased) She inherited it from a close family friend who had bought it from Cooling Galleries in London. (Sticker on back of frame)
This is an original painting on canvas of a winter scene in Holland and people traversing the frozen waterways. There is a tag on the frame for JJ Spohler, however the work itself is unsigned. There is a later 20th century typewritten bio on the artist to whom the work is attributed. These are generally to be taken with a grain of salt, especially when the work itself is unsigned. There are two Spohlers; Jan Jacob Spohler (1811 - 1866) and his son Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler (1837 - 1923). The style of the framing and age of the canvas (unless re-lined and framed) post dates the timeframe of Spohler Sr. The work is more likely Spohler Jr. Both painted in a very similar manner. The estimate does not serve as an authentication of being by either or neither, and is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
I have had a good look at the painting with a magnifying glass and I can’t see any signature actually on the painting.
Thank you very much for your appraisal! Jan
You are very welcome
Is this also signed on the front of the painting, or only the tag affixed to the frame?
