What does this mean?

Hi Diane,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Noritake was one of the most popular names for dinnerware in the mid 20th Century; not only was it handsome and serviceable but it was also comparatively affordable. Increasingly few people today, however, entertain in such a formal way and the market is saturated with services of varying sizes, colors, etc. Because there is less demand than supply, fair-market / auction prices for Noritake remain low, typically bringing $3-5 PER PIECE.

The Ardis pattern was released as part of Noritake’s large-scale formal dinner service catalog aimed at North American and international department store markets. It signaled a transition from formal and traditional aesthetics towards more modern designs and was aimed at the deliberately 'luxury table' aesthetic rather than casual dining. It was first issued in 1956 and discontinued in 1966.

There has been a recent trend towards 'tablescaping,' which was discussed in a CBS Morning Show segment (https://www.replacements.com/as-seen-on-cbs?srsltid=AfmBOooibTw-nUiy-mCYe3PDlMjZ8QEOhHDq2BlEWSXS0PuQjtkUeHpG).

While you have a modestly sized service with few serving pieces (platters, tureens, serving bowls, etc), the fact that you have the same (and even) number of place pieces (plates, bowls, cups), benefits its value, which I've appraised at about $4-6 per piece.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage 79-piece Noritake parcel gilt porcelain part dinner service
in the Ardis pattern, made in Japan, bearing the Nippon Toki "N" backstamp in use from 1953, comprising:
12 dinner plates
12 salad plates
12 soup bowls
12 bread plates
12 coffee cups with 12 saucers
1 sugar bowl
1 cream pitcher
3 large serving bowls
1 large salad bowl
1 serving platter
CONDITION: This set is reported to be in excellent condition, without chips, cracks or repairs.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
