Gilt Wooden frame. 48 cm long and 36 cm wide.
It was previously owned by Prynne Hutton and given to my late partner as a Christmas present over 20 years ago.
Dear Patrick,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal enquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please send me a photo of the signature (if there is one)?
Thanks,
Karine
Dear Patrick,
Thank you for getting back to us so quickly.
The item presented appears to be a 19th-century painting depicting two English setters in a landscape attributed to I. Rothwell. The overall gilt frame measures 36 cm (h) x 48 (w) cm. The reverse has a label reading "An artist material Warehouse, William Rodman & Co", etc. The number in blue on the back may suggest that it was once exhibited. The work appears to be in excellent condition overall.
Provenance: Prynne Hutton to present owner.
Sadly, after checking our records, very little appears to have been published about this artist's life and career, and his work has been rarely offered on the auction market until now. The most recent auction result that we have is for a painting sold in 2016. Therefore, the estimate highlighted in red has been based on the following criteria: the most recent existing auction market, the subject work's size, composition, and condition-based on photographs and comments provided.
In many cases, please note that pricing for similar items available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
Best regards,
Karine

I examined the painting again and through the dirt on the canvas I found the signature and date. I have sent you copies of the signature separately. Will this affect the estimate please?
Thanks
Patrick.
Karine I have researched this artist further and find that Christies sold on the 28/05/1999 "A bridge over a river with anglers in the foreground" for £3680, "English Setters on point" on 26/11/1999 for £1093, "An english setter and a pointer in a landscape" on 27/11/2003 for £1880. Will the signature and date on my painting affect your estimate please?
Dear Patrick,
Sorry for having taken so long to reply to your last message.
I am glad you found a signature on your painting. According to our records, the last signed painting by this artist was sold by Bonhams in 2006. Please see:

Therefore, I have reviewed the pre-sales estimates accordingly.
Best wishes,

Further to my previous email, it appears from his paintings sold by Christies that he did not sign all of his paintings.

Patrick

There is no signature that I can see but the painting needs cleaning and a signature maybe hidden.
