Painting (type of paint unknown, ?oil) on canvas in simple wooden frame. 72 cm x 61.5 cm (size includes painting only not frame). Upper right corner has letters in all caps; difficult to read but best guess is “KHAMMERSMIM”.
Purchased from antique store, probably in Midwest USA between 2000 and 2005.

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a first half 20th century oil on canvas portrait of a bearded man, wearing a large black hat, black coat and smoking a black pipe. The signature might read V or K HAMMERSMITH. The back of the canvas is inscribed - possibly by the artist - "please restretch this canvas". Unfortunately there is no artist with the name Hammersmith and painting in this style listed anywhere. If it could be established who the portrayed man was, perhaps an actor, it would have a positive effect on the value of the painting.
