Original (believed) Arteluce Gino Sarfatti 2003 "Sputnik" chandelier
18 October 2025
Description

Purchased by my grandparents as part of their redecorating of their Highland Park, IL (Chicago) home in the late 1950s. It has one arm that is disconnected from the base but still functions. This would appear to be repairable.

Hi Craig,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

One of Sarfatti’s most iconic designs is the chandelier usually referred to as the “Sputnik” style, sometimes under the name Fuoco d’artificio (“Fireworks” in Italian) or model 2003. It was designed around 1939, although many examples were executed in the 1950s.

The fixture typically consists of a central hub from which multiple tubular brass arms radiate, each ending in a light (bulb or socket). One description: “24-light sputnik ceiling light … tubular brass arms which radiate on a brass structure with canopy.” The aesthetic is very much aligned with what later came to be called “Sputnik lamps” in the 1950s–60s: starburst radiating arms, metallic finish, exposed bulbs, an optimistic space-age feel. In fact, this piece predates the 1957 launch of the Soviet satellite.

The design is often cited as the iconic chandelier of mid-century modern lighting; it has been widely copied and referenced. Ones made in the late 1930s/early 1940s can bring high-four and low-five figures at auction while later ones (circa 1950s-60s) are usually a little less. It would need to have Arteluce labels to be genuine; the model number would identify the era this was made in.

Based on the provenance to a 1950s home, I think it's probably safe to assume its NOT from the 1940s; in its current condition, it's worth between $2,000 and $4,000.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
