Artist: Fr. Miguel de Herrera (Spanish Augustinian friar) Origin: Mexico Year: 1756 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 11" x 11"
My grandmother, Beatriz de Regil Muse, gave me this painting in the early 1980s. She was of British and Mexican extraction. Our family in Mexico came from Spain in the 1700s. My grandmother spent most of her youth on a hacienda in the Yucatan Peninsula. She acquired and inherited many pieces of Mexican Colonial art through her family.
Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your help and patience. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with measurements of 11 x 11 inches. The painting depicts probably the Saints Anna and Joachim who are the parents of Maria the mother of Jesus. We see her daughter Maria with her husband Joseph in the background. Between a couple of St. Anna and St. Joachim is an angel who announces the pregnancy of St. Anna with Maria. In the background, we see architecture and other figurines who are priests. This means the architecture could be interpreted as the Temple of Jerusalem. This is a typical baroque anachronical theological iconography showing the Annunciation of Anna while showing her later daughter Maria in the background. The painting is signed by Fray Miguel DE HERRERA (1696-c.1765), located and dated 1756. Sadly the location is not clearly readable.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 8.000 to 16.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
An artwork of such high potential value requires further authentication research. This estimate is provided on the condition of authenticity.
With kind regards,
George

Dear George,
Any updates on my appraisal?
Many thanks.
Elizabeth Harris
I am going to dispute this charge since I never have received the appraisal.
I hope you can see clearly the updated image. I have found other pieces of his work in collections posted on the internet and the signature appears identical.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Harris
