Kirk Stieff repousse silver coffee/tea service. This four-piece set was inherited from family who were prominent on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The condition is excellent. There is a heavy tray that goes with the service, but the tray is plated (It is not the tray that is pictured). At this point I am wondering about its value. I may wish to sell it in the near future.
The weight of the pieces without tray is about 7.5 lbs. The size should be discernible from the photos.
Hi Valerie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Kirk Stieff Repoussé silver hollowware is significant for being one of the longest-running and most iconic American sterling patterns, continuously produced — with variations — since the early 19th century.
The repoussé floral motif was first introduced by S. Kirk & Son around 1815–1828 in Baltimore. Unlike flatware patterns that follow strict form templates, Kirk’s repoussé was hand-chased, meaning each piece was individually worked, making no two exactly identical.
In the 20th century, Stieff Company became associated with Kirk production; later corporate mergers combined the names under Kirk Stieff branding.
The resale (auction/secondary or retail/primary) market for silver is closely tied to the fluctuating going rate for silver, which is now quite high (possibly historically high). At about 7.5 pounds (a bit more than 109 troy ounces though there may be some non-silver parts that pad that weight), this beautiful service has a scrap value of around $8,800.
Historically, and when silver prices aren't so high, Kirk Steiff repousse sets of this size usually sell in the $2,000-3,000 range.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
