What does this mean?

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

This service might be Danish but I've not found any identical examples upon which to base an attribution; additionally, it's the kind of porcelain that became popular in the Victorian period (mid 19th Century) and continued to be made through the early 20th Century.

Tea sets hold importance for various cultural, historical, and practical reasons. They have been a symbol of hospitality, refinement, and tradition across different cultures, often representing more than just tools for serving tea. Offering tea is a universal gesture of hospitality and warmth. A beautiful tea set such as this enhances this experience and reflects the host's care and attention to detail.

Regrettably, we're living in an age where increasingly fewer people "have friends over for tea", and the preferred method of drinking coffee is usually on-the-go, from paper or styrofoam cups or metal carafes. I personally think it would be wonderful to bring back the custom of having some quiet time in the afternoon around a beautiful set such as the one you have.
Tea sets with larger plates are referred to as DESSERT services, with plates for different kinds of dessert; it's unusual to see two different sizes of plates.

Most European tea or dessert services of this size and by unattributed makers usually bring between $100 and $200 at auction.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Victorian style parcel gilt and cobalt painted porcelain dessert service
unattributed maker, probably European, late 19th/early 20th Century, marked to the underside, comprising:
6 gilt-washed cups with 6 matching saucers
6 dessert plates
1 cream pitcher
1 serving plate
CONDITION: this set appears to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$100-200 for the service*
