This painting is approximately 14" x 18" and appears to my untrained eye to be a water color on quality paper.
The belongs to my mother and has been in her family since at least the 1920's. They lived near Ithaca NY. Her father spent time in Belgium in WW 1, but I don't know if that's where the painting came from.
Dear Gary,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a watercolor drawing on paper with the measurements of 18 x 14 inches. The drawing depicts a woman in a Renaissance costume reading a book. The drawing is signed with a not clear readable signature. It appears that we have a not defined capital letter and the letters "izzini". Sadly there is no fitting artist in reference books or similar databases. This drawing was made in Italy in the 1880s or 1890s. Perhaps this drawing should be opened by a restorer to see the whole signature which is covered by the Passepartout.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
