Glass container with stopper
29 August 2020
Description

15" tall tapered vase shape. 5" round base. Slightly tapered going up the body. About half way up the taper decreases down to about a 1" opening at the top. The rim flares to a 4" opening about 1" deep. The stopper is an inverted tear drop about 9" long. Forgive my color blindness. But it looks like it is layered green and white glass. After being blown almost looks jade like. There are no markings on the piece. The stopper has a broken end. Not sure if it was made that way. Or if it had a longer stopper that broke off sometime in the past.

Provenance

My wife inherited it from her step grandmother. But have no history beyond that. Would like to know its function. If it has one.

What does this mean?

Hi Perry,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Tapered vessels with stoppers like this were decanters for wine (or perfume bottles if they were short).
The tip of the stopper is usually a bit more finished / less jagged than this but it is unlikely to have been longer or have something else at the tip so I think it's just unfinished rather than broken.
A nice decorative piece but not one with tremendous collectible value
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A Vintage MidCentury Modern Jade Green Milk Glass Decanter
Continental, possibly Italian, mid 20th Century
With elongated bulbous stopper, the flaring lip over pinched neck and flaring ribbed body.
15 inches overall height
PROVENANCE: inherited
$50-75*
