150 x 90cm Titled “Sand Hills - My Country” Painted in 2010. The painting refers to Abie’s ancestral country of the Bush Hen Dreaming - Sandhills Country near Utopia
Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Outback Australia
This is an original work by female artist Abie Loy Kemarre who is of Aboriginal descent and lives in Australia. She is a member of the Anmatyerre people who hail from the Utopia Homelands in Central Australia. A recurring theme in her work is based on the legend of the Bush Hen which travels across the land to seek its favorite snack, a bush tomatoe called arkityira. Each dot applied in her work is a representation of an arkityira. This particular undulating style, which is a theme in her works is a visual 2-d interpreation of Awelye, a ceremonial body paint design. The curves in the painting mimic the movement of the women when performing their traditional dance of the Bush Hen Dreaming. At a retail gallery, this style of work by her can be priced at $12,000. Retail, or primary gallery prices do tend to be higher than the secondary, or auction market. Kemarre has a long list of recorded auction sales, which is an accomplishment for a contemporary artist in her 40s. At auction her works carry estimates of $5000 - $7000, however they rarely sell through and when they do, the winning bids are usually considerably less. The estimate here is based on actual past auction sales which is known as the secondary market.
