The picture is 19.25 by 23.25 inches. It has a guilt frame of an intricate design.
Purchased from a designer in Hinsdale. Artist and date of painting not known. It is an original oil believed to be an English protrait.
The appraised work appears to be an oil on canvas half-length portrait of a gentleman. The sitter’s fitted waistcoast and tied white linen shirt with necktie indicates that this painting was likely executed in the 19th century. The work’s condition is poor overall, with evidence of canvas buckling visible along the upper left corner and along the top edge. There are also multiple areas of paint loss, especially seen in both upper corners, in a few more central spots throughout the composition, and along the lower edges. The estimate provided is based on comparable examples recently offered and sold at auction. In many cases, pricing for similar works available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples. The appraised work’s condition was also taken into consideration in the process of establishing the estimate provided.
