Oil painting
New York
This is a vintage, 20th century, about 1930 - 1940's original oil painting by New York artist, Sigmund Menkes (1896 - 1986). This is a still life painting of fruit and cabbage done in an almost plein air style painterly stroke. The verso, or backside of the painting has 2 labels including the Galleries of Associated American Artists which was established in NYC by Reeves Lewenthal in 1934. The other label is from Lucien Lefebvre-Foinet, a famed artist's supply shop in Paris and a collector himself whose brother was involved with Peggy Guggenheim. Menkes was born in Lvov, Poland and studied art in Krakow, Berlin and Paris before he emigrated to America in 1935. He was prolific and has a long and strong history of past auction sales. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
The painting is 20" X 12". With the frame it is 27" X 20"
