This is an antique, likely mid 19th century or possibly earlier, 1800 - 1850s, unsigned oil on board painting that employs the painterly method of 'chiaroscuro' which is the depiction of light and dark. Painters would show their talent at rendering a realist image using candlelight in the evening. This work is done in the manner of Belgian 19th century painer Petrus van Schendel (1806 - 1870) who was known for night market genre paintings light studies. It is recommended to have this inspected in person to determine if this is indeed by can Schendel. This assessment does not serve as an authentication of the author of the work.
