Very Old Painting on thick heavy copper. Measures 10 3/4" x 9 3/4" hand carved frame. Measurements are for the painting not including the frame
I bought this painting from a family in Marblehead, Massachusetts. They told me that the painting passed along from generation to generation within the family and they were told that the painting was painted by the Italian Artist Giorgione
Dear Simon,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Can you let me know if there is a signature anywhere?
Thanks,
Karine
Dear Simon,
Please find below a description along with an estimate of your work.
Your work appears to be a copy of "The Tempest" (in Italian "La Tempesta") (c. 1503) initially executed by the Venetian painter Giorgione 1478-1510), which can be found in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy.
Your painting is very dark and will probably need to be cleaned if you decide to sell it one day. This is an oil on copper measuring 9 3/4" (h) x 10 3/4" (w). It is unsigned, and it is housed in a beautiful gilt frame. Despite the darkness of your work, the condition looks excellent overall.
So the appraisal that I am going to give you is based on the assumption that it is by a follower of Giorgione. So for this particular appraisal, I have taken into account the subject work's size, composition, condition, as well as the current auction market for followers of Giorgione of these last five years.
Best regards,
Karine
Hi Karina , no there is no signature visible that I could find.
